SUGGESTIONS GIVEN

Have made worksheets for each chapter in A & P - Students fill them out before the class meets. This requires them to read the chapter and think about the material before the class meets and I discuss the info. They are much more interactive because they are familiar of the material. They are awarded a few bonus points for having these worksheets filled out. 90% plus say this is helping them learn & retain the info. The exam scores have improved.

I use a process for students to learn "How to learn from your mistakes" with a survey of study skills before the test, a process for correcting the test. I'd be glad to share this process in more detail.

I give extra credit when students correct their errors on tests, quizzes & assignments ( up to half of points lost). This encourages students to keep going and not give up when they do poorly. It causes them to readress their problems, and hopefully learn the material better.

Have students work problems in class. Collect and grade them. Call on students by name.

Have students work with a partner in class.

Ask Students to bring their calculators to class and work the calculations for problems I set up.

If students appear sleepy, talk faster (speed up the class).

Assign homework, collect, and grade it.

Do not curve exam grades, but offer another chance to learn the material.

Students keep a notebook of notes. Homework, quizzes, etc., They are free to ask questions about assignments, students are asked to work independently & in groups in class.

Group projects to allow brainstorming

Take class attendance daily

Pop quizzes on days with low attendance

Students must contact me within 24 hours if they want an excused absence for missing. Must have a justifiable reason. (Excused Absences determined in case-by-case basis) ½ points for class period lost for arriving late or leaving early.

I relate everything we do in class to something in the real world.

I try to use humor appropriately in every class.
