| Each
year we are faced with inclement weather that affects college
operations. During periods of severe inclement weather,
I must make a decision on whether to delay the opening of
the college, close the college or keep it open at normal
hours. To help me with the decision, I ask members of the
Leadership Team to consult with weather and law enforcement
officials, drive local roads, and recommend to me a course
of action. I make every attempt to arrive at a decision
as early as possible, often before 6 a.m. for the day in
question.
Once
the decision is made, the Public Relations office will contact
the media with one of two messages as follows:
All campuses of Hazard Community &
Technical College will be operating on an inclement
weather schedule with students reporting at 9:30 a.m.
for their 9:30 a.m. classes. Employees are expected to
report to work at 9:00 a.m. A d ecision regarding
evening classes will be made by 4:00 p.m. and announced
then. (Classes scheduled
to start before 9:30 a.m. will be canceled with the makeup
policy clearly stated in the course syllabus and approved
in advance by the appropriate division chair and dean.)
All campuses of Hazard Community &
Technical College are closed. (All activities and classes,
day and night are cancelled).
These
announcements will be placed with the media outlets noted
on page two of this memo. We do not announce that we are
“open as usual” so you should assume we are operating on
a normal schedule unless you hear otherwise. Please do not
call the media or Evelyn Wood for information; simply listen
for announcements on the radio and television stations.
When
the college is on an inclement weather schedule, employees
are expected to report to work by 9:00. However,
on inclement weather days the decision on whether or not
to come to work is one which the employees must make for
themselves. If the college is open, (regular or delayed)
it is a regular work day and normal college absence policies
are to be followed should an employee decide that travel
is not possible due to the weather. Classes missed will
be made-up and will be coordinated by the Provost's Office.
If
the college is closed, employees should not report to work.
Should you have questions, please feel free to contact my
office or the Office of Public Relations.
