Instructor Bios

DEAN OSBORNE: Beginning his career in 1980, Dean Osborne has had a hand in just about every area of the bluegrass music business. As a bandleader, he and the Eastbound Band were nominated for IBMA emerging artist of the year. As an event producer, his credits include the Red Mule Festival, the J.D. Crowe Bluegrass Festival, and the Osborne Brotheres hometown Festival, the latter being nominated for IMBA Event of the Year in 2001. As an instructor, Dean was named the director of the Kentucky School of Bluegrass and Traditional Music in March of 2006, located in Hyden. Dean and his wife Sarah are the proud parents of son Jesse and daughter Royce.

CURTIS BURCH: In 1971, Curtis moved to Nashville in search of a musical career. He teamed up with Sam Bush and Courtney Johnson and John Cowan to form the New Grass Revival. Curtis played with New Grass fob ten years. During that time, they made six albums and toured with such as John hartford, Buddy Emmons, Vasser Clements, Ronnie Dunn, Willie Nelson, John Starling with Lowell George and Bill Payne of Little Feat, Tut Taylor, Norman and Nancy Blake, to name a few. In 1987, Curtis performed with Doc Watson and Jack Lawrence on Garrison Keillor's "Prairie Home Companion" show on Disney Channel. That same year, he toured with Leon Redbone. In 1993, Jerry Douglas and Tut Taylor produced "the Great Dobro Sessions." This recording won a Grammy in 1995, and also won "Instrumental Recording" and "Event of the Year" at the 1995 IBMA in Louisville, KY. Curtis recorded with Norman Blake on the sound track CD for the movie O Brother Where Art Thou? which won five Grammies. In 2005, Curtis recorded with Texas singer-songwriter, Willis Alan Ramsey, co produced by Jamie Oldaker (Erie Clapton's drummer). He is currently recording with different performers including his wife Ruthie and brother Ricky. They recorded a live performance with the Bowling Green Chamber Orchestra conducted by Jeffrey Reed in 2003 of eight bluegrass songs and two New Grass Revival songs.

BOBBY OSBORNE: In the world of acoustic music, the name Bobby Osborne is synonymous with the terms legend," "nationally renowned vocalist," and "master mandolin stylist." As a 50-year member of the Osborne Brothers, the Hyden, Kentucky native became the first bluegrass artist to perform on a college campus as well as the first to sing at the White House. A member of the Grand Ole Opry since 1964, Bobby was also the first to record what would later become the Tennessee state song and the MOST recorded song in bluegrass history, Rocky Top. In 2005, Bobby became a solo artist launching his band, the Rocky Top X-Press. Most recently, a 2007 Grammy nomination adds one more reason fans and critics the world over consider him the greatest bluegrass singer in history! His latest release on Rounder Records is entitled Bluegrass Melodies.

J.P. MATHES: J.P. Mathes was born in Elizabethton, TN and began playing banjo while he was in middle school. While attending high school he was allowed to join the East Tennessee State University Bluegrass Program. he continued on with ETSU receiving both his undergraduate and graduate degrees. As a student he was formed all over the United States and the world spreading bluegrass music. Performance highlights include; the Smithsonian Folk Festival, the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, NATO Headquarters in Brussels Belgium, and seven tours of Japan. J.P. Mathes was also the graduate assistant for the ETSU Bluegrass program handling scheduling ensembles and teaching banjo. In 2006-2007 he was named adjunct instructor at ETSU and taught ensemble, banjo, group guitar, and bluegrass seminar. He is currently performing with the International Bluegrass Group called the Last Frontier which tours both in the United States and Japan.

BOBBY OSBORNE JR.: Born into a world renowned bluegrass family, Bobby Jr., or Boj as he is known throughout the Bluegrass World, has literally grown up at the feet of the best. While around music all of his life, his serious interest in playing began at the age of fourteen. His first big stage experience came in the unlikely form of the Grand Ole Opry when he was pressed into service to replace a band member for the Osborne Brothers. Quite a bit of pressure for sixteen. In 2004, Boj took the full time position as guitarist for the Osborne Brothers. That band evolved into Bobby Osborne & the Rocky Top X-Press. During this time, Boj graduated High School with Honors. After receiving a diploma from the SAE (School of Audio Engineering) Institute of Nashville, he joined the staff of KSBTM in November of 2007, where he assists in recording, web development, and technology classes.
